It’s tragic and utterly insane how women are still treated as chattel. Your mother was better than all those who claimed to care about her by despite what she lost and still she had it in her to fight for her daughters. That’s strength. Thank you for sharing
Your mother and I are the same age! :-) Happy birthday to her!
And yes, defending the rights and freedom of girls does always require our attention. I remember reading an article a few years ago, I think it was Bangladeshi girls protesting against child marriage. They wanted to be able to continue their education. I loved that they were able to even voice that, because I don't know that my generation was able to, as a movement. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you for sharing. This makes me think about my mom, same kinda story, but different. My mom wasn’t a child bride, but she was married at 16, and had me at 17. By the time she was 21, she had 3 boys. And this fucked her whole life up. Set a crazy wheel in motion that she has never recovered from. She’s been married 5 times and divorced 5 times. And now she has 5 kids… And this might sound like I am complaining, but I am not. My mother is a good woman, a good person. But marriage at such a young age fucked her up. And my dad, my dad was 23 or 24 when she was 16… They met at church… and my mother’s mother had to sign papers, so like I said, different, but the same… and I want to write about it… But my mother doesn’t open up…. but my mother is a good woman, and a good mother… she did the best with what she had… and at least all of her kids, we children, came out alright…. (Except for one brother, who became a cop and voted for Trump, we can’t all be artists. My other brother is a teacher, my sister too, and my youngest brother is a sports television producer for CBS.) Anyways, thank you for sharing, this is an amazing post, and thank you for sharing. I know this should have been a DM, but the spirit caught me, and I haven’t done my morning pages, and I’m on vacation, and I’m drinking coffee, and I haven’t worked out yet, and I’m crazy… but you’re a superb writer and you’re going to be great at HUNTER!!! Go get ‘em!!! And thank you!!!
Your mom has had an incredible journey! I feel like there’s so much I need to extract from my own mother still, so much generational trauma too. We were meant to be writers ❤️
